Sir Patrick Geddes SIR PATRICK GEDDES
LIFE and WORK

Patrick Geddes was born in 1854. He spent his early years in Perth when his father retired from the army. Patrick attended Perth Academy and worked in a bank. But he wanted to be a scientist and eventually, after a lot of study and travel, he became Professor of Botany in Dundee in 1889. By then he had other interests and nowadays he is remembered for these.

He was one of the pioneers of town planning. People should think about the growth of cities. City jobs developed from those in the countryside. He produced reports on towns and cities from Dunfermline to Tel Aviv and Madras. To Geddes, it was important that planners listened to the people.

He was one of the pioneers of environmental education. In his books and exhibitions e.g. in the Outlook Tower, Geddes believed we should learn about PLACES, PEOPLE and WORK - both near and far. Patrick Geddes, working to the end, died in the south of France in 1932. He was knighted the year before.
